The Giants’ offense finally seemed closer to full strength for Monday night’s game against the Buccaneers.
Saquon Barkley and Andrew Thomas were both back from injury, while wide receiver Kenny Golladay was the closest he’s been to full strength in over a month. But instead of getting a glimpse of what Big Blue’s offense was supposed to look like when it was assembled this offseason, the Giants struggled to get anything going offensively, managing just one touchdown that was aided by a drive that started on Tampa Bay’s 5-yard line following a turnover.
“We gotta do a better job of scoring points,” head coach Joe Judge said. “I know that sounds pretty obvious and to the point with it, but I’m gonna keep it very blunt with that right there.”
Ten total points and 215 total yards coming off a bye week and another extra day to prepare is hardly a cause for optimism, especially given the pieces New York had back this week. Barkley managed just 25 yards on six carries, while Daniel Jones put up just 167 yards through the air.
“I thought at times our guys protected very well, especially early when we played the way we talked about playing it all week,” Judge said of his offensive line. “There were a lot of shots down the field. Some we capitalized on it, some we drew penalties.”
That didn’t last, as the Giants were kept off the board entirely in the second half, and Judge was left to once again answer questions about an offense that seems to be painfully underperforming, leading Judge to appear to address offensive coordinator Jason Garrett’s job security in a not-so-safe tone.
“I expect us to produce at a higher level,” Judge said. “Let’s keep it at that. My expectations are pretty high, and I’m not compromising for anybody.”
As for Golladay, who was targeted just twice as the team’s big free agent signing of the offseason, Judge also admitted that he need to become much more involved in the offensive game plan.
“He had more than one [target], but it wasn’t enough,” Judge said. “We’ll make sure we correct that.”
