Joe Judge reportedly didn’t have his finest season back with the Patriots after being let go as the Giants head coach.
Following a disastrous tenure with Big Blue, Judge went back to his roots with Bill Belichick in New England, but a detailed report by Andrew Callahan and Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald indicates that Judge was not liked by Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, and other coaches didn’t like how Judge operated, and even Belichick would “blast him” in practice.
“[Judge] would speak extra loudly in meetings, trying to project like he was the guy,” the Herald’s source reported. “And I think that kind of rubbed people the wrong way.
“A lot of people were frustrated with [Judge].”
Also in the report were multiple indications that Jones and Judge did not get along, including going on “profanity-laced outbursts” towards each other, and that Jones “didn’t like” Judge “at all,” and his trust in Judge was “non-existent.”
The coaches may have felt similar. Judge reportedly lent his coaching to other positions outside of quarterbacks during the season, and coaches found themselves having to go back and correct Judge’s coaching to players.
Jones struggled this season with Judge, and the Patriots fell short of the playoffs. The team responded by bringing back Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator, suggesting that Judge could be on his way out after just one season. Meanwhile, the Giants took a massive leap into the postseason after Brian Daboll took over Judge’s job.
