Joe Judge wants the blame for Giants struggles: 'The fish stinks from the head down'

Some Giants fans have clamored for head coach Joe Judge to start publicly shouldering some blame for the team’s struggles, which continued last weekend with a blowout loss to the Rams at home, to drop to 1-5 on the season.

On Thursday, that contingency of the fanbase got its wish when Judge spoke with reporters.

“I’m the head coach. It’s my responsibility, point blank,” Judge said. “Every player on this field, every position group, it all comes down to me. The fish stinks from the head down.”

New York, now 1-5 on the season, is just 7-15 since Judge took over as head coach before the start of last season. The result has been boos geared towards the team, and even co-owner John Mara, who heard the jeers earlier in the season during Eli Manning’s retirement ceremony.

Defensive tackle Leonard Williams took exception to the boos after Sunday’s embarrassing loss, but Judge wants those boos to be geared towards himself.

“There are no excuses, no exceptions,” Judge said. “You demand it of your coaches to make sure players are playing the right way. You demand it of the players to know what to do and to go out there and do it. But it starts with me and ends with me.”

As Judge takes the blame for the Giants seemingly heading toward another lost season, he still has the support of his coaching staff.

“We all look to our leader for strength,” special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey said. “He’s done a hell of a job out there, I think, of keeping the team moving forward…Joe's a tough guy, Joe's mentally tough and he's doing a great job with our team as far as the leadership part of it.”
