Joe Schoen: Giants 'would love to have' Daniel Jones back

The Giants’ end-of-season staff press conference was a lot more Joe Schoen than Brian Daboll, but the GM and head coach agreed on one thing: they would “love” to have Daniel Jones back.

The feeling is mutual, as Jones said Sunday, but like he did in discussing many facets of the offseason, Schoen was careful to note that desire aside, allocation of resources could force some tough decisions.

“We’d like Daniel to be here, but as he said, there’s a business side to it,” Schoen said. “He played well this year and did everything we asked him to. We haven’t gone down that road and had those meetings, but we would like to have Daniel back. Both sides have to have those conversations, but the goal would be to have him back and build a team around him.”

Schoen did note “there are tools at our disposal,” meaning the franchise and transition tags, but once again, it all comes down to finances.

“We still have to draft well and get to good cap health. We have a unique situation here, but it comes down to how we want to divvy up the resources we have,” Schoen said. “We’re trying to build this thing to sustain it. Every situation is unique, and I think Daniel played well enough this year and we’d like to have him back, but we have some difficult offseason decisions to make. That’s why you love the draft – you turn in the card and they’re yours, and you know the contract structure.”

If it was based solely on on-field play, well, consider both the GM and head coach fans.

“I don’t know if there was an ‘a-ha!’ moment where we knew (he might be a long-term guy); we continued to evaluate throughout the season, and he was executing the game plan,” Schoen said. “Dabs and I communicate on a daily basis, and he continued to prove himself throughout the season. We’re pleased with how he played this season.”

Added Daboll: “I’ve said it all year, he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do and done a really good job operating and executing our offense. He made strides in a lot of different areas, and he’s been a good leader and played the quarterback position well. I’m happy we had him.”

Unfortunately, even though the Giants have turned the page to next season, Monday was really Day 1 of that endeavor, so it all comes down to “we’ll see,” as the Giants will begin their player meetings later this week to try to figure it all out.

“There’s tools at our disposal, and we’ll go through several scenarios,” Schoen said. “We’ll get together and talk through options when appropriate.”
