Joe Schoen talks Daniel Jones, draft prep, salary cap: 'I'm open for business'

New Giants general manager Joe Schoen has plenty of work to do in his first offseason with Big Blue, including trimming roughly $40 million from the salary cap and scouting for two top-10 picks that will be crucial in the rebuild of the franchise.

Schoen told reporters on Tuesday that he will begin working “sooner than later” on the salary cap squeeze, and when it comes to the team’s plethora of draft picks, anything is on the table, including listening to trade offers for Saquon Barkley.

“I’ll be open to anything,” Schoen said. “I’m open for business.

“If somebody wants to move up and we move back or get a 2023 pick, I’ll be looking to do what’s best for the New York Giants in 2022 and beyond. Compete for today, build for the future.”

The Giants have had some struggles with top-10 picks in years past, specifically with Saquon Barkley as a second overall pick and Daniel Jones at sixth in consecutive years. With a new regime, Schoen and the Giants will look to maximize their draft capital to either stay put and make their best selections at fifth and seventh overall and beyond, or make a trade if the right one comes along.

“I’m gonna find seven players that I like, and I’m gonna know I can sleep good at night,” Schoen said. “If somebody calls and it makes sense to move back, or there’s someone we love a couple spots up and we can go get him with the draft capital, I’m good with that. But we’re gonna keep all options open.”

As for the future of the quarterback position, Schoen again expressed his belief in Jones, and will focus on finding a quality arm to slot behind Jones on the depth chart, despite reports that the team will decline his fifth-year option.

“We’re gonna bring a competition everywhere, but Daniel Jones is our starting quarterback right now,” Schoen said. “He was injured last year and he had a backup quarterback. We did the same thing with Josh Allen last year. I think the backup quarterback is one of the most important positions in the league. It’s something we’re gonna look at and address. But it’s not just quarterback, it’s the entire league. I think building depth is going to be a priority.”
