Saquon Barkley reportedly won’t sign his franchise tag, and therefore won’t attend the Giants voluntary offseason workouts that get started next week.
With Barkley’s reported holdout come questions about his future, as past running backs like Le’Veon Bell held out from signing a franchise tag to the point where he was traded to the Jets. While Barkley’s situation doesn’t seem to be one that will head down that route, there is always the chance things turn ugly.
With that in mind, a division rival is running to Barkley’s defense, taking a break from his usual job of trying to take him down.
Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons called out a fan on Twitter who suggested that Barkley was declining in the second half of last season, and is why the Giants shouldn’t pay the 1,000-yard rusher. Parsons also added that Big Blue absolutely should cut their former No. 2 overall pick a check, and make sure he stays in New York.
“I mean yeah that’s what happens when you the best player on your team you idiot!” Parsons said. “The scheme on Monday morning is, ‘we will not let SAQUON BARKLEY BEAT us!’ People just think we be out here playing free-for-all!
“That mf is that offense! Pay him!”
The Giants and Barkley have been negotiating on and off since the bye week of last season, and while they drew closer to a deal, according to general manager Joe Schoen, once a contract was agreed upon with quarterback Daniel Jones, the clear route was to tag Barkley, despite it likely not going over well with the lifelong Giant. So, Barkley will now apply pressure to get a new contract done.
