Mike Glennon reflects on offensive struggles, benching in Giants' loss to Dallas

For the umpteenth week in a row, or so it seems, the Giants offense struggled once again, this time heavily due to the passing game, or lack thereof.

In their 21-6 loss to Dallas Sunday, the Giants had just over 300 yards of offense, but it broke down like this: 124 on the ground and 178 in the air, 82 of which came on the final drive after Mike Glennon was replaced with Jake Fromm.

“I thought we ran the ball pretty well, just some self-inflicted wounds,” Glennon said after Sunday’s games. “There were a couple of times we did move the ball well and then just ended up with field goals and then a couple of kind of dumb decisions on my end forcing the ball that were not good decisions.”

Glennon’s three picks were the biggest bug-a-boo, and while one of them was a bad bounce, the second was a poor throw, and the third pretty much sealed the Giants’ fate thanks to an incredible play by Quandre Diggs in the end zone.

“I just kind of got flushed out of the pocket, wasn't able to get my body all the way around and tried to make a play,” Glennon said of that pick, which came with eight minutes left and the Giants down 15. “It wasn’t a smart decision and it's the guy that's leading the league in interceptions. Tried to make a play and ultimately just couldn't get my body all the way into it.”

Glennon was also responsible for one other turnover of sorts: he took the ball on a QB sneak as the Giants went for it on 4th-and-1 from their own 29, and his failure to make it gave the Cowboys a short field en route to their final score late in the third.

“We saw an opening and honestly right when I got the ball, I thought we were going to get it and it felt like we got a little push and then I looked over and I could tell we were short,” Glennon said.

“I'm going to look at the tape before I make any kind of final statement there, but obviously we've got to execute better,” head coach Joe Judge added curtly.

The Giants had actually gone for it on fourth and one in their own territory on the previous drive, and in that case, they got 46 yards thanks to Devontae Booker breaking a run and a horse-collar tackle penalty.

That led to a field goal, even though the Giants actually lost yardage on the rest of the drive, but the second try not only wasn’t as successful, but also led to points for Dallas.

“We had favorable looks, so you're not locked into absolutely having to go for it in just because you take the line right there. We always build in multiples that allow us to get out of jail free, as we say. If you don't like the look, you can always go ahead and take a delay and punt the ball,” Judge said. “We had the looks we wanted on both ones – we had the big play with Book down the sideline, then we had the opportunity for the sneak. We've got to convert and execute that right there. That's a look we wanted. We've just got to go out and make sure we take advantage of it.”

Judge admitted that the Giants discussed removing Glennon one drive before they did, but decided to see what he could do with a short field after a turnover.

What he did was throw his third pick of the day, right to Quandre Diggs, and that was it for Glennon’s day – although to his credit, he was complimentary post-game of Fromm’s NFL debut.

“He did a good job for the first time in an NFL game; moved the ball down the field and did some good things,” Glennon said.

If Daniel Jones isn’t cleared to return next week against Philly, the team he was injured against three weeks ago, the Giants will have a big decision to make: stick with Glennon, who has been mostly ineffective over the last three weeks, or give Fromm a chance in a season that’s likely all over but the shouting.

Judge said the team will discuss it, but whatever happens, Glennon is going about his business as a professional no matter what.

“I mean, obviously you never want to see it happen, but I'm there for him just like he is there for me. We'll support each other no matter what the situation is.”
