Tentpole events in sports are always a good reminder to be skeptical of fake social media posts…even if they sometimes come from legitimate sources.

Such was Monday morning for many Giants fans, who, along with much of Chargers Twitter, were perhaps flummoxed 25 days after April Fool’s Day by a fake trade announcement that L.A. had moved up into the Giants’ No. 11 slot in Thursday’s first round:

The problem: the trade isn’t real, even if Pro Football Focus’ post was. According to Max Merten on Twitter, it was a joke he mocked up to send to a friend who works for PFF…and somehow, the PFF social media account got wind of it and Tweeted it as if it was real.

Of course, it was 17 years ago when the Giants and Chargers did make an epic swap of a few spots, that of course being the then-San Diego Bolts selecting Eli Manning No. 1 overall and sending him to Gotham for the G-Men’s No. 4 overall pick, Philip Rivers.

It was also just a few days ago that Giants GM Dave Gettleman said he has indeed tried to trade back in past NFL Drafts despite that statement from him becoming a meme-like running joke…so who can ya believe?
