Sal starting to 'get behind' idea of another Giants regime change: 'It's gotten so bad'

Sal Licata maintained for much of the season that Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen haven’t had enough time to be sufficiently evaluated, and they should be given the chance to draft and develop their own quarterback to get a true sense of their potential.

Now, after a blowout loss to the Bucs that ended with players calling the effort “soft,” Sal is relenting to the idea that it might be time for the Giants to blow it up once again.

“I still believe Daboll can be a good head coach, but for the first time, I am really getting behind the idea and understanding the idea that it may be time to change the entire regime,” Sal said. “I still don’t feel like I’ve gotten a proper evaluation of Joe Schoen…and I still believe, at my core, that Daboll can be a good head coach…but the timeline, again, is all convoluted…they had immediate success, and that could be their biggest downfall.

“This is the type of stuff that gets coaches and regimes fired.”

The Giants have regressed each year since Daboll and Schoen won a road playoff game in their first year at the helm, and the past two years have included a rift between Daboll and former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, public frustration from players with the benching of Daniel Jones, and a whole lot of losing. Sal wanted to see the Giants finally have some stability in their leadership after recent head coaches have only lasted 2-3 years since Tom Coughlin, but it’s hard to stand by the results of the last two years.

“You want to have some continuity…but it’s not working here. It’s getting worse,” Sal said. “The feel, the energy, it’s gotten so bad…Look at these guys. They have no answer.

“We’re at that point in the timeline where the easy thing might be to blow it up and start over again.”
