Boomer: Saquon Barkley absence would have big impact on Giants, but deal will get done

As Saquon Barkley contract negotiations don’t seem to be making headway with just days until the deadline, Gio wondered how much the Giants’ win/loss outlook would change if Barkley was swapped out with a replacement-level running back.

Boomer believes it would have a bigger impact than some would think.

“I do,” Boomer said, when asked if Barkley’s absence would have a major impact on the team. “Maybe a game and a half.

“He’s not Ezekiel Elliot. He catches the ball out of the backfield…he is an incredible athlete, incredibly fast, and he’s dedicated. I think all of those things need to be taken into account.”

Barkley’s availability for Week 1 could reportedly be in “serious question” if a deal isn’t reached by Monday, but Boomer still believes it won’t come to that, and Big Blue won’t have to worry about replacing one of its faces of the franchise.

“I still believe a deal will get done,” Boomer said. “He’s not gonna make the money up next year. Whatever he turns down this year, he’s not making up next year…he’s a running back that’s turned 26. He’s right in the middle of his best spot in his career, from a health and age standpoint. I see four years, and somewhere close to $14 million a year. That’s around what I see as a decent contract.”
