Saquon Barkley defends John Mara after halftime booing: 'He's done a great job'

The Giants had a chance to break from the franchise’s current lowly state on Sunday and instead look back on the franchise’s glory days, but instead, the fans at MetLife Stadium chose to protest the present while celebrating the past.

Eli Manning, who led Big Blue to two Super Bowl victories, had his number retired at halftime of New York’s game against the Falcons, but cheers quickly turned to boos when team co-owner John Mara stepped up to the microphone to speak about Manning.

Manning tried to silence the boos in an awkward moment that spoke to the fans’ frustration about the state of the franchise.

Mara told ESPN after the ceremony that “I would boo too. We’re 0-2 and down at halftime.”

Saquon Barkley, who scored his first touchdown since 2019 in the loss, stood up for Mara when asked about the fan’s reaction.

“I don’t think that is fair to Mr. Mara,” Barkley said. “He’s done a great job.”

That job hasn’t translated onto the field, as the Giants are now 0-3 after dropping a home game against a beatable Atlanta team, and appear to be heading for another losing season.
