Boomer & Gio: Should recent Giants contracts change Dave Gettleman's legacy?

With Andrew Thomas signing a five-year contract extension, including the most guaranteed money ever for an offensive lineman, Boomer wonders if it’s time to rethink how Dave Gettleman’s tenure with the Giants is perceived.

Gettleman is often criticized for using a No. 2 overall draft pick on Saquon Barkley, and his misses at head coaches, but Boomer says the Giants cornerstones that have been signing new deals in recent years are Gettleman products, and that should count for something.

“Does it mean anything to you that Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and Andrew Thomas all got second contracts for the Giants?” Boomer said. “He traded for Leonard Williams. He’s still here.

“They could have gotten Josh Allen, but they weren’t going to draft a quarterback in that draft [when Barkley was picked]. They were going to give it one more shot with Eli Manning.”

Gio agrees that the rise of those homegrown players should take some of the heat off of Gettleman, though it has also been Joe Schoen’s coaching hires that have maximized those players.

“It changes that legacy a little bit,” Gio said. “But drafting Saquon Barkley second overall was not a good one….but yeah, his fingerprints on this organization, the perception of them, have changed with the Daniel Jones contract, and also Dexter Lawrence and Andrew Thomas.”
