Saquon Barkley is back at Giants practice this week, his first time working with the team since tearing his ACL in Week 2 of last season.
Big Blue is being particularly careful with its star running back as he continues to work his way back from knee surgery, but with Barkley now back at camp and still aiming to be ready for Week 1 against the Broncos, is he a strong top-five fantasy pick?
NFL’s Fantasy Editor Marcas Grant wouldn’t go against taking Barkley with an early pick now that he’s suiting up for practice.
“I definitely feel better about Saquon now that he’s back at practice,” Grant told Zach Brook on the latest episode of Upon Further Review. “The Giants have been very vague about his recovery, even Saquon himself hadn’t felt so confident, so I was nervous.”
Barkley and the Giants are still preaching patience when it comes to his return to game action, and he will almost certainly miss the first two preseason games, with the first preseason contest coming this weekend against the Jets. But despite the recent injury, Barkley isn’t far removed from being one of the most dynamic running backs in the league, tallying the most yards from scrimmage in the NFL as a 21-year-old rookie in 2018, then rushed for 1,003 yards in 2019.
With the Giants adding more offensive weapons around him this offseason, and with an improved offensive line that showed significant strides down the stretch last season, Barkley could be in for a big year if he stays healthy.
“If the player is nervous, then I’m gonna be nervous,” Grant said. “But now that he’s off the PUP list, he’s back at practice, I feel better about him at four.”
