Wink Martindale did not hide his joy after Giants draft cornerback Deonte Banks

There didn’t seem to be anybody happier than Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale after Big Blue took Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks in the first round.

After New York made its selection, Martindale was seen wrapping up general manager Joe Schoen in an aggressive bear hug, clearly thrilled with where Schoen elected to go after trading up to 24th overall.

“You guys know Wink’s defense and what he likes, and Deonte fits that mold to a T,” Schoen said. “So, yeah, he was ecstatic.”

Martindale likely loves the idea of adding some cornerback depth for the upcoming season, something that was needed last season. Given the depth of star talent at the wide receiver position in the NFC East, there was likely a good amount of relief from Martindale as well, knowing he would have more help limiting the likes of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Ceedee Lamb.
