The World Baseball Classic will come to a close on Tuesday night, after weeks of debate surrounding injuries and overall interest, while ratings and attendance have shown that interest in the event should no longer be a topic of debate
Gio acknowledged that he was wrong about the interest in the WBC, as TV ratings in Japan remain astronomical and attendance in the US has eclipsed attendance at Marlins games in Miami, but he still can’t understand why.
“I cannot get into it at all,” Gio said. “I was wrong about the interest. People are interested, a lot of people are going to these games and there’s a lot of country pride that is associated with this. But for me, it’s not something I grew up paying attention to. But who wins it is not something I’m going to remember or care about.
“There are a lot of people who care about this, and I just can’t quite understand it.”
For Gio, he still hasn’t gotten over Edwin Diaz’s season-ending knee injury, which was suffered while celebrating Puerto Rico’s dramatic win over the Dominican Republic, a game where the atmosphere at LoanDepot Park was praised as one never before seen inside the stadium. Between that and the lack of interest in previous years, Gio still won’t have interest when Team USA meets Japan in the final on Tuesday.
“That injury is painful, it’s tough, it hurts every time I think about it,” Gio said. “But it’s different when you’re getting hurt getting ready for your season in your uniform. It’s just a different situation.”
