Gio seriously concerned about NFL's future after seeing new kickoff in action: 'It's over'

After watching Thursday's Hall of Fame game, Gio has serious concerns that the end of football as we know it could be on the horizon.

"I didn't think about this at all after I heard about it…but I'm telling you football fans, buckle up. Because it's over," Gio said.

"All the people who have called in here for many years, 'Put a skirt on the quarterback,' 'turn it into flag football,' and I said 'Listen, don't worry about it. It's a violent game, they're never gonna take it out of it.' Well, last night, I felt differently."

Thursday was the first time NFL fans were introduced to the new kickoff rule, which was adopted from the XFL to increase player safety and, in turn, increase the amount of plays an offense can run per game. The kickoff happens at the 30-yard line, with both teams lining up opposite each other at the receiving team's 40-yard line, and the "landing zone" where the kickoff must land is between the end zone and the 20-yard line, while touchbacks are brought out to the 30. But it was much too jarring for Gio, who is worried about where the rule changes will end as the league continues its quest to limit concussions and serious injuries.

"This is such an extreme rule change for the sake of player safety. I am scared of what the game is gonna look like in 10 years," Gio said. "This is the most extreme rule change I have seen in professional sports in my entire lifetime.

"I understand player safety and concussions, all of these things are important to the NFL, as they should be. But we also see in other sports, guys beating the hell out of each other. Boxing, UFC, guys bloodying each other…and somehow, in the NFL, we have to do this crazy rule change to make sure everyone's okay? If we start here, then what are we gonna do? Guy goes over the middle, you put two hands on him, and suddenly, the whistle blows? Is that what we're gonna see next?"
