The upstart Lions were seen as a potential feel-good story heading into the season, and those talks have reached a fever pitch after Detroit shocked the defending champion Chiefs in their own backyard to open up the NFL season on Thursday night.
After one night of Lions hype, Gio is already sick of it.
“Everybody loved Dan Campbell, Jared Goff…I like Dan Campbell, it just annoys me that all this Lions hype has turned into the Lions beating the Chiefs, and now I have to deal with a whole week of this Lions hype,” Gio said.
“They are just a horrendously pathetic franchise…I hate the Lions. I’ve always hated the Lions.”
The Lions have indeed been mired in losing for years, as last year’s 9-8 finish was just their third winning record this millennium, so Gio, as a Vikings fan, hasn’t had to deal with Detroit as much of a threat. He still doesn’t see them as one, liking them to how others view his Mets whenever they seem poised for a good year.
“You know how Braves fans always laugh at the Mets hype? That’s how I look at the Lions hype,” Gio said. “Like when the Mets were winning the division last year, it was always ‘The Mets are gonna Met, remember 2007?’
“When you hear the hype, you’re like ‘Chill.’ Let them do something for real first.”
