The Jets and Giants both seemed to have successful nights at the NFL Draft on Thursday, addressing multiple needs with top-10 picks, while Gang Green traded up to get a dynamic pass rusher in Jermaine Johnson, who many thought would be off the board well before he was taken by Joe Douglas and company at No. 26.
Still, despite the newfound hype around MetLife Stadium, Gio believes both franchises may still have a glaring problem at the most important position.
Gio is convinced Daniel Jones isn't the answer for the Giants, and Big Blue might agree after declining his fifth-year option on Thursday, like many expected. But Gio also believes Zach Wilson's rookie career didn't show much to suggest that his selection at second overall in last year's draft was justified, and unless both teams take noticeable steps forward in terms of quarterback play, it may be time to pump the brakes on the hype train.
"I've seen three years of Daniel Jones, and I've seen one year of Zach Wilson, and I didn't love Zach Wilson's rookie year either," Gio said. "Right now, I'm worried about both of these quarterback positions for both of these guys in a big way."
With more of a sample size around Jones, though still a potentially incomplete one given his injuries and the brutal offensive situation around him, Gio can more confidently say that Jones was a miss in the draft, when he was taken sixth overall, and the Giants should move on as the continue their rebuild.
"There has not been someone in the NFL in recent memory that you can give me an example that you would want who has had the trajectory of Daniel Jones, meaning three years of flashes, but mostly mediocre football, and being hurt, with a ton of turnovers," Gio said. "There hasn't been a guy who then all of a sudden in year four become spectacular.
"The best example that has been given to me that's out there is Ryan Tannehill, but Ryan Tannehill isn't the answer either."
Boomer believes Jones could still be the answer, but after three seasons where he has shown potential only in glimpses, it needs to be on display on a more consistent basis in 2022, or else it's time to look elsewhere and once again search for their next Eli Manning.
"This is a prove-it year for Daniel Jones," Boomer said. "I think the owner is giving him a chance. He said 'Look, we're not gonna pick up your fifth-year option. I think we screwed you over the first three years of your career. I got you an offensive coordinator that got the best out of Josh Allen out in Buffalo. Now it's up to you to show us that you belong here, and if you play well and get us to the playoffs…then we'll reward you with a new contract."
