Gio isn't fuming over the Mets losing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but he is curious as to why both the Mets and Yankees didn't offer more money to finish the deal to grab the top free agent pitcher on the market.
"I am not really all that upset as a Mets fan," Gio said. "The one thing I don't understand is that if you're going to go to $300 million and you're banking on being the New York Yankees, and selling your brand to Yamamoto, why not go to $325 million and have the most money up there with the Mets and Dodgers?
"Steve Cohen flies out to Japan, he has him over his house for dinner, he knows the Dodgers and Yankees brands are more appealing to Yamamoto and he would have to offer the most money to get him here, and all he did was match the offer! That's confusing to me."
Gio believed Yamamoto likely wanted the Yankees or Dodgers all along, but both New York teams should have put their money where their mouth is and made the decision as difficult on Yamamoto as possible. Instead, neither came in with a higher offer than Los Angeles.
"I'm confused by Brian Cashman and Steve Cohen," Gio said. "We said for weeks that the only way they get Yamamoto is by spending the most money…to not go above it, he seemed like he really wanted the guy."
