The Islanders and Sabres struck a trade on Thursday, just one day after Buffalo had already dealt Jack Eichel.

Thuesday’s move was more of a salary cap maneuver for both sides, as New York dealt the rights to defenseman Johnny Boychuk for future considerations. Boychuk, who retired last year and had been on long term injured reserve due to an eye injury, has a contract that expires after this season, and frees up $6 million in cap space for the Islanders.

Meanwhile, the move for Buffalo keeps the team above the cap floor to make up for the salary that was lost in dealing Eichel to the Golden Knights.

Boychuk called it a career last November after a skate cut to his left eyelid resulted in 90 stitches. He initially retuned from that injury and played in the postseason, but noticed that his vision had been affected.
