In a post written in French for TVA Sports’ website, where he currently works as an analyst, the former NHL wing revealed he’ll be stepping aside from working on TV for treatment.

"Today, it is with great sorrow that I must retire from your screens, for an obligatory break," he said. "A necessary stop during which I will have to receive treatment for lung cancer. 1-0 so far, but I haven't said my last word."

“I assure you that I intend to fight with all the determination and all the ardor that you have seen me display on the ice and in my game,” Bossy wrote. “That same determination that has helped me achieve my dreams and counting my goals, the one that propelled me to the top of my sport, when I still put on my skates.”

Bossy was part of the Islanders dynasty that won four consecutive Stanley Cup titles from 1979-1983. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.

“The battle I am about to wage will not be easy. Know that I will give my 100%, nothing less, with the objective of meeting you again soon, after a very eventful hockey game,” said Bossy. “You will never be very far in my thoughts. On the contrary, you will occupy a privileged place and you will be one of my motivations to get better.”

Bossy spent his entire career with the Islanders, and had his No. 22 added to the rafters at the Nassau Coliseum.

“Like athletes who are about to deliver the performance of their lives, I will need all of my strength and focus,” said Bossy. “Surrounded by my family and friends, I wish to preserve this sacred and peaceful space, far from cameras and interviews."

In just 10 NHL seasons, Bossy scored 573 goals and 553 assists — his goals per game average is among the best in league history.

“In hockey, you always have to stop between periods to polish the ice, heal wounds, repair breaks, rest, review the game plan, absorb the energy of the crowd and come back STRONGER. Come back stronger with one goal in mind: to win and give your all … I am confident that I can count on your discretion and your understanding,” said Bossy.

The team voiced its support for Bossy, saying, "An Isles legend on and off the ice. We are with you, @Bossy5050."
