Ilya Sorokin took home the NHL Fan Choice Save of the Year in 2022, and he very well may have sealed the deal for a repeat.
The Islanders goalie ignited NHL Twitter with his highlight-reel robbery of Toronto’s Erik Gustafsson in the first period of Tuesday night’s game on Long Island, a ridiculous save that helped ignite a blowout win for New York that was pivotal in the team’s playoff push.
Facing pressure with 7:30 left in the first, Sorokin positioned himself to stop a potential Mitch Marner shot, but Marner instead send a pass through the slot to Gustafsson, who stared down a wide open net, at least until a diving Sorokin stuck out his stick in desperation, and stopped the puck in flight with the paddle.
Sorokin’s save was quickly labeled the save of the year, and it would be hard to argue against it.
