Perhaps it was good for the Islanders that the NHL delayed its return to play by canceling Monday's games?
Late Sunday, the Islanders announced that they have added four players – Anthony Beauvillier, Cal Clutterbuck, Zach Parise, and Oliver Wahlstrom – to the NHL's health and safety protocols list.
The team also added Cole Bardreau, Simon Holmstrom, and Grant Hutton to the taxi squad, where teams can stash emergency call-ups to fill out their roster before a game.
Sunday was the first day the Islanders and other teams were allowed to practice following the NHL's extended Christmas break, which was extended on both ends due to a slew of positive COVID tests throughout the league last week.
The Islanders are scheduled to return to play Wednesday, hosting Detroit at UBS Arena, albeit now without four more players. This is actually Beauvillier's second stint on the COVID list, but he was determined to be a false positive last time and missed minimal time.
The Isles have a couple of games still to make up, including Monday's postponement, although the NHL announced last week that the league will not be sending players to the Olympics, so that scheduled break will now be used to make up postponements.
