Semyon Varlamov couldn’t get the win for the Islanders on Monday night, but his 44-save effort was highlighted by a highlight-reel save to keep the game tied in the second period.
With Monday night’s game against the Avalanche knotted at one apiece, Varlamov denied Colorado defenseman Cale Makar after Makar tied to tip the puck into a wide open net after playing it off the boards behind Varlamov, but the Islanders backup reached out and stopped the puck with the blade of his stick.
Varlamov faced a flurry of shots in the first period and stopped 19 of 20, but began to wear down in the third, allowing four goals in a span of 4:21 in the third. New York went on to lose 5-4, Varlamov’s sixth straight defeat as he fell to 3-12-1 this season.
With Ilya Sorokin holding the starting job, Varlamov could be on the move before the trade deadline, and Monday’s effort, despite the third-period collapse, could have shown a playoff team that Varlamov could help their club down the stretch.
