Aaron Rodgers’ level of commitment to the Jets, at least in terms of time, has been a key question since the future Hall of Famer arrived in New York.
Those questions were quieted after Robert Saleh expressed confidence that Rodgers would be with the team for more than one season, and they were silenced on Tuesday when Rodgers discussed his $35 million pay cut.
“This is going to be a few years partnership,” Rodgers said. “After that, hopefully there’s not a huge cap issue. That’s why we didn’t backload it or put any kind of special escalator or strange things in the contract to weigh down the organization after I’m done playing.”
So, no more need to wonder if Rodgers is a one-and-done with Gang Green. The Jets have their quarterback for the next few years, and he put his (remaining) money where his mouth is on Tuesday, expressing no regrets about taking much less money to ensure that his new team is in the best chance to win moving forward, even after he’s gone.
“There’s two caps. There’s the salary cap number and there’s the cash,” Rodgers said. “There were a few of us who did some things cash-wise to open up some freedom there…I feel great about what I’m making. It wasn’t really a negotiation or a back-and-forth. It was an easy conversation, much of it between me and Joe [Douglas]…it wasn’t like there were any stress points.
“This to me is a win, win, win for everybody.”
