The Jets committed over 100 yards in penalties in a maddening 23-20 loss to the rival Bills on Monday night, as the offense once again couldn’t break out while the presence of a new head coach didn’t spark the team to show a heightened sense of discipline in a game where the AFC East was on the line.
“That’s the detail,” Boomer said. “That’s the thing that Todd Downing has the clean up with these guys.”
For Gio, it was concerning to see the Jets not just look like they did before Robert Saleh was fired, but looked like they did last year with Zach Wilson at quarterback, something that many thought was in the rearview with Aaron Rodgers back in the fold.
“What Rodgers said was so true. ‘I was brought here to win those games,’” Gio said. “That’s three in a row that he should have won, that we feel like we’ve watched the last couple years and said ‘If we had a real quarterback, we win that game.’ Three times now.”
The Jets still had a chance to tie or win the game with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but Aaron Rodgers underthrew Mike Williams for a game-sealing Bills interception on a downfield heave (Rodgers told reporters after the game that Williams ran the wrong route). Rodgers appeared to have Breece Hall open for a short route that seemingly would have resulted in an easy first down, but instead, it was another frustrating Gang Green loss in a hyped season that seems to be slipping away already.
“He stepped into the Hail Mary. You can see he has the arm,” Boomer said. “When he steps into it, it’s like a missile coming at you. That last one, he threw it off his back foot for no reason. He kind of short-armed it for whatever reason. He had him wide open. He throws it out in front of him, this could be a touchdown.”
