Even Zach Wilson himself said “I have to play better” when discussing his three-INT performance after Sunday’s loss, but the onus is on the Jets’ coaching staff to find a way to help that process – or make a switch if Wilson can’t.
In Boomer’s mind, though, Gang Green should’ve already at least thought about it, because he did – and would’ve benched the “entitled brat” after his third pick.
“What he has to do, and his coaching staff has to do, is know what his responsibilities are, and not make these colossal, bonehead errors,” Boomer said. “If it were me, I’d just sit him down and say enough’s enough; you have to hold him accountable.”
Gio agreed, invoking how the Giants have handled Daniel Jones as a contrast.
“The difference between what we saw with Brian Daboll and Daniel Jones after that pick Week 1 in Tennessee and Zach Wilson: accountability,” Gio said. “Playing the way he did in Denver, and coming back and throwing those three picks, I thought benching him would be on the table.”
“It would’ve been for me,” Boomer shot back.
Building Wilson up is one thing, but there has to be accountability, and quite simply, Boomer & Gio think Wilson has been “babied” too much to this point.
“He was babied his rookie season, bringing in his QB coach and all that, and we hated it,” Gio said. “Now is the time – if they didn’t do it after last week because they were basking in the glow of how great the 5-2 start was, then they have to do it this week.”
“He was completely careless, no matter what he says after the game. This isn’t BYU – you’re playing with and against men whose paychecks depend on you going out and winning football games,” Boomer added. “For him to play with such a lack of understanding of what’s going on was eye-opening for me. I didn’t think they would win yesterday because of him – I still don’t think he’s ready yet.”
What made it worse is that Jets head coach Robert Saleh had implored fans to show up early and show up in droves to see the fireworks…and all they got was a dud.
“The Jets are imploring their fans to show up, and they show up and you put that performance out there?” Boomer asked. “The second two interceptions are unexplainable to me. To me, that’s just nerves and carelessness. Those are things young quarterbacks go through, and when they ultimately emerge from playing that way, they’ll end up being better.”
Maybe Wilson will, but if his postgame presser is any indication, Boomer isn’t convinced Wilson has the maturity for the spot just yet.
“Daniel Jones has come through all the slings and arrows, and it’s Brian Daboll’s responsibility to find out if he can be the leader of the Giants – and so far, so good,” Boomer said. “Zach is in his second year, he’s had injuries and issues and been babied…he’s like an entitled little brat when he’s up there talking to us. As a guy that’s played that position, to act like that after the game, it pissed me off.”
Gio said Wilson needs a “reality check from someone in the locker room,” and Boomer couldn’t help but agree that someone needs to snap Wilson out of his own head and into actual reality.
“It’s almost like, are you even realizing what’s happening around you?” Boomer asked. “Stop with what you’re trying to explain as your accountability to this game – I think he tried to do that, and it got worse.”
What makes it all more curious is that Mike White was elevated to second-string status this week, which Robert Saleh explained as wanting to “know what we have in case Zach gets injured again,” and while Gio wasn’t convinced it was much more than the Jets trying to mess with the Patriots, well, you never know.
“They could go back to Joe Flacco next week, and I don’t see a legitimate situation when Zach Wilson is healthy that they’ll go to Mike White at any point this year – unless it gets so incredibly bad that there’s nothing else they can do.”
