Boomer & Gio: Would Mike Vrabel take Jets head coaching job?

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Mike Vrabel would be open to interviewing for the Jets head coaching position provided he “approved” of the next general manager.

Vrabel represents one of the top coaching candidates expected to be available, along with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, but like with Johnson, Gio doesn’t see Vrabel taking a job with Gang Green over any other potential opening.

“I don’t buy that at all,” Gio said. “If there are two teams offering the head caching position to Mike Vrabel, he ain’t picking the Jets. Every other team is in a better situation than the Jets are...because Woody Johnson is not running that team.”

Boomer disagrees, and believes Vrabel would be at least intrigued by the idea of coaching in New York and reviving a franchise that has been in dire straits for decades.

“I do, especially if you’re offering a guy some money,” Boomer said. “You know Vrabel has contacts...he’s a guy who has the personality and the gravitas. We thought that gravitas was very important.”

What would a Vrabel hire mean for Aaron Rodgers, who has said he would like to continue with the Jets if he decides to continue playing at 41 years old next season? Boomer believes whoever coaches the Jets next season could decide that they want Rodgers under center for a chance to win in 2025.

“You never know. If they bring in what we call a coach with gravitas, that coach is gonna want a quarterback that he thinks he can win with immediately,” Boomer said. “And that may be the case. You never know what the situation may be...coaches want quarterbacks that can play. I know he’s not playing at the level that everyone expecting him to, but he’s coming off an Achilles injury.”
