Boomer makes case for Dawn Aponte as next Jets GM

The Jets have hired The 33rd Team to help with their search for their next head coach and general manager, and Boomer Esiason wonders if their GM search leads them to making a historic hire in Dawn Aponte.

If that’s the case, Boomer says the Jets would be getting a legit NFL veteran who is capable of thriving in the position and rebuilding the organization.

“Maybe Woody and Christopher can see themselves hiring the first female NFL GM, which would be an amazing accomplishment for Dawn Aponte,” Boomer said.

“She’s been a part of the NFL. She’s been everywhere. She’s been part of the NFL league office, she’s been with Mike Tannenbaum in Miami. She actually interviewed for a GM job last year. So she’s out there. She knows the NFL. She knows everyone involved. She knows every other GM, all the other owners, everything.”

Aponte got her start as an intern with the Jets and rose up the ranks in the early 2000s, and eventually spent seven seasons in the Dolphins front office as vice president of football administration and eventually executive vice president, tasked with responsibilities like managing the salary cap, which is a big plus for any GM. She interviewed for the GM job with the Chargers last offseason, but has remained in her role in the league office. If it is the Jets who take a shot on her this offseason, Boomer says it could pay off.

“It may be her first foray as a GM...but she is a grizzled, NFL veteran,” Boomer said. “She’s been through the war. She’s got the slings and arrows. She’s got the toughness that I think she can handle the job if she in fact got the job.”
