Zach Wilson and the Jets did just enough to grab a road win against the lowly Broncos on Sunday, but Boomer still sees some big problems with the team’s starting quarterback.
Wilson threw for 199 yards and one interception, allowing the running game behind Breece Hall and the team’s opportunistic defense in the second half to lead the way, but Boomer says Wilson needs to improve his awareness if he is going to be a positive for his team.
“You can’t be just lazy and acting like you’re the next Joe Cool, the next Joe Namath. You have to be smarter than that,” Boomer said, citing a disastrous sequence at the end of the second half where Wilson completed a pass over the middle, then took too much time getting to the line of scrimmage to spike the ball and set up a field goal.
“I’m assuming the coach is saying ‘Hey, we have no timeouts, you can’t throw the ball in bounds, we have to get it out of bounds or in the end zone.’ It’s as easy as that. It looked to me like he didn’t even understand what was happening…the lack of urgency with that spike and that play is what troubles me.”
Boomer then noted the lone interception, a costly one with the Jets leading by three with just over two minutes to go in the game.
“Then, this horrific throw to Garrett Wilson,” Boomer said. “That throw is supposed to be outside the right shoulder, high, so Garrett could use his ability to go up and get it…they must throw that play in practice, they’ve probably thrown 5,000 times since OTAs…by the way, there was nobody around Zach Wilson when he went to throw that ball.
“That is a huge problem for this young kid. The awareness aspect of his game is just not there.”
