Garrett Wilson provided a Catch of the Year candidate on Thursday night, hauling in a leaping one-handed catch in the end zone that was reminiscent of Odell Beckham Jr.’s highlight-reel grab against the Cowboys in the same building nine years earlier.
Boomer marveled at the athleticism and ability of the young Jets receiver, but the ruling of a touchdown left him wondering what exactly is a catch in the NFL nowadays.
“George Pickens goes up with ball in the end zone, comes down, his right foot hits twice but his left foot never hits. Touchdown,” Boomer said, referencing the Giants/Steelers game on Monday night. “Last night, Garrett Wilson makes one of the greatest catches I’ve ever seen...he comes down with the ball, they rule him out of bounds. Then they go back and replay it, and someone in New York decided the shin hit the ground before the knee hit.
“I want that call to be a touchdown...but honestly, the week before, George Pickens’ right foot touches twice, no other part of his body touches, and they call it out of bounds.”
Pickens himself ripped the league after the Wilson catch was ruled a touchdown, but Gio countered that Wilson’s shin landed in bounds, which is considered legal along with the knee and elbow, even if a second foot doesn’t get down. Still, Boomer understands if Texans fans were frustrated by the call being overturned after review.
“I was sitting there watching this thinking, ‘This was out of bounds,’” Boomer said. “And all of a sudden, he was in bounds because his shin hit first...to me, George Pickens was more in bounds than Garrett Wilson.”
