Bill Belichick is now officially the head coach at the university of North Carolina, but news broke Saturday that broke one of our hosts.
According to multiple reports off a Dianna Russini exclusive, Belichick, who a quarter-century ago wrote ‘I resign as HC of the NYJ’ on a napkin to quit that job, apparently once again inquired personally about the current vacancy before taking the Carolina gig.
Chris McMonigle mentioned it during his show Saturday morning, and Brandon Tierney – in the middle of a day chock full of coaching his kids before Saturday Night’s Main Event on Long Island tonight – heard it and just couldn’t help himself from calling in to complain.
“Are you kidding? I heard you say this, and tell me this isn’t true!” BT screamed. “There’s no way that Belichick reached out to the Jets, and these idiots didn’t even want to have a conversation?”
“Bill Belichick picked up the phone and called the Jets, and they let him go to Carolina!” Chris affirmatively. “How is that possible?”
Same old Jets, that’s how.
“This is why…we can talk about Rodegers or the O-line or the coach and GM or whatever from a football perspective, but the fact that Woody Johnson did not follow up on this aggressively tells you that Jets will always be the Jets,” BT said. “What an absolute joke this is!”
“They have one of the best rosters in football, but they’re in desperate need of leadership,” Chris replied. “That’s all they freakin’ need is leadership, and they have the greatest leader in the history of the sport arguably calling them to see if they can bury the hatchet and come take on the Jets, and two weeks later he’s in Chapel Hill? I cannot believe that the Jets and Woody Johnson would not run at this chance – who else are they gonna hire? It’s Bill Belichick! To be fair to them, and I have no interest in that really, but if he was willing to call the Jets, who else was he going to call? That’s a Godsend that fell in their lap, and they didn’t jump on the opportunity to bring in the best head coach in sports history?”
BT has just one word to describe it.
“Apathy,” he said. “This is what has happened in the last dozen to 14 years: the biggest danger to the Jets isn’t disgust or anger, it’s almost apathy. When you hear stuff like this, we can all rant and rave about it, but this is the stuff that should make Jets fans sit back and ask, what are we investing our time and our money and our energy on this for? This is lunacy!”
BT thinks if we find out that Woody entertained the call and it came down to logistics and control, that’s one thing, but to ‘not even consider it, this is the highest level of dysfunction.’
