BT & Sal: Jets should stick with Aaron Rodgers, who clearly showed he can still play

As the Jets search for their next head coach and general manager, whoever accepts those job offers will quickly have to decide whether or not they want to keep Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback for the 2025 season.

Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata agree that keeping Rodgers would be the best move for Gang Green, even after a frustrating season.

“Why wouldn’t you keep Aaron Rodgers in the building if you need a stopgap quarterback already?” Sal said. “Kirk Cousins, are you kidding me? If you’re going to need a quarterback anyway and most likely not getting a top rookie...why wouldn’t Aaron Rodgers be a no brainer to come back?

“He is an asset to an organization, even if he is not the same quarterback he once was. He is still by far the best option for the Jets.”

The Jets likely won’t be able to grab one of the top quarterbacks in the draft if they pick from their current slot at seventh overall, and even if they did, Sal believes the team would need a veteran under center to give them their best chance of winning next season. BT agrees, and would also take Rodgers over another veteran option like Sam Darnold, as he saw Rodgers show more than enough to prove that he is still capable of winning football games.

“I think, by any objective measurement, Aaron Rodgers has proven that he can still play,” BT said. “He was eighth in yards and seventh in touchdowns, and that was with a defense that never gave him a short field and never got off the field enough to get him the ball enough.

“You can see he’s not quite the same guy...but he’s better than anything I’ve seen under center for the Jets since the one good Fitzpatrick year, and I don’t know how long before that.”
