Mekhi Becton looked overmatched at Jets training camp on Tuesday, and was taken out shortly after being beat by Will McDonald at the line of scrimmage.
Robert Saleh told reporters afterward that the former first-round pick was removed for “pitch count” purposes, and he is still working his knee back to full strength, but BT and Sal still see a massive bust.
“What a bust. That’s two for Joe Douglas,” Sal said, also referencing the recently traded Denzel Mims. “That’s a bad one.”
For BT, despite Becton shedding weight in the offseason, he hasn’t done nearly enough to instill belief that he can return to his rookie level of production, and instead has proven himself to be injury prone while complaining about a role he has not earned.
“I’m not banking on Becton,” BT said. “When people tell you or show who they are, believe them. And to me, he’s a lazy, out-of-shape bust at this point. He’s shown me nothing else.
“He got hurt, then he was ridiculously heavy, and now he’s really thin and getting abused in practice.”
