The Jets are hoping that a head coaching change will turn things around as they head into a pivotal clash with the Bills on Monday night.
But C-Mac says nothing will change unless the quarterback play improves, and he didn’t see a quarterback in Aaron Rodgers ready to compete for a division title when he was handing the ball off on fourth and short in a key spot against the Vikings on Sunday, instead of trusting himself to go out and make a play.
“This is supposed to be him and this coach having a relationship that has won him MVPs and he can’t even pick up the small stuff?” C-Mac said of Rodgers and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
“Where is Rodgers on the field making this decision? I put it on him more than I put it on the coach.”
Rodgers and Hackett remain as Robert Saleh departs, and C-Mac says the Jets now have to hope that Rodgers is simply settling in to his new teammates and surroundings and getting his confidence back after major surgery, and not showing signs of a quarterback at the end of his rope.
“There’s a chance he’s washed. There’s absolutely a chance,” C-Mac said. “We saw signs of it that last year in Green Bay, and now it’s finally here, off another major injury. That is, without question, possible. I haven’t seen enough to make that decision, and I saw something somewhat special in that game against New England…that’s the best quarterback performance the Jets have had in forever.”
C-Mac isn’t ready to go that far, but he will agree that it can’t be ruled out, which of course would be disastrous for the Jets.
“I haven’t seen enough to just be like ‘He can’t play,’” C-Mac said. “Is there a chance that he’s not as good as he hoped? Sure…but in my mind, the worst that Rodgers could be this year is still a quarterback, that, with this roster, can have you competing for the division or a playoff spot…at worst, he’s gotta be a serviceable quarterback that can win games with this roster, right?”
