C-Mac rips Jets defensive effort with season on line: 'Worst display of tackling I've ever seen'

The Jets defense, with the season on the line, put together one of the worst displays of tackling by an NFL team this season, and the result was a 31-6 blowout loss to essentially end any chances of a playoff berth.

Chris McMonigle opened his show on Monday morning by sounded off on that defensive unit, which was supposed to be the strength of the team heading into the season.

“That was the worst display of tackling I’ve ever seen,” C-Mac said. “We thought there would be a baseline of what this defense could be…a baseline of some sort of serviceable defense to expect from this group.”

Instead, the defense has been a liability, never more than on Sunday, when the group collectively missed 20 tackles, tied for the most by any team this season. one of the more egregious misses was by Sauce Gardner, who had Arizona tight end Trey McBride wrapped up before the first down marker on a third down pass, but McBride shrugged the Jets cornerback off of him and hurdled his way to a first down, leading to a score than essentially put the game out of reach.

C-Mac says Gardner, a first-round pick, has become the face of the disaster that has become the Jets defense.

“That play from Sauce Gardner, in a game where they are down 14-6, to have him tackled short of the line to gain, and to allow him get out of that tackle…and get that first down, which leads to a touchdown that basically ends the game, is an out-and-out disaster,” C-Mac said.

“This was easy for the Cardinals. The effort [the Jets] gave, that’s what bothers me…this defense was embarrassing.”
