The Jets have used seven different kickers over the last three seasons…and it looks like they’re on to an eighth in 2022.
Eddy Piniero was one of five cuts made by Gang Green on Tuesday afternoon, when rosters had to be cut down from 85 to 80. Also released by Gang Green were DB Elijah Riley, offensive linemen Isaiah Williams and Caleb Benenoch, and linebacker Kai Nacua.
The biggest two names there are Piniero and Riley, the former of whom was signed last December after the Jets had tried two previous kickers. Piniero made all eight of his field goal attempts and nine of 10 extra points last year, and was 3-for-3 (one FG, 2 PAT) this preseason – but his cut means that former Rams and Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein will be the Jets’ eighth kicker in four seasons, and seventh different Week 1 kicker in seven seasons.
Riley was signed off the Eagles practice squad last November and was a starting safety in seven of the Jets’ last eight games, notching 45 tackles. Both Williams and Nacua also spent part of last season with the Jets, the former appearing in four games while spending much of the year on the practice squad, the latter signing in December and appearing in three games.
Benenoch signed with the Jets earlier this month after spending last season in New Orleans.
