Evan explains why he is 'irrationally giddy' about Aaron Glenn hire
After taking a full day to digest the news of Aaron Glenn’s hiring, Evan is still all in on the former Gang Green first-round pick becoming the team’s next head coach.
“I am irrationally giddy about this hire,” Evan declared to open Thursday’s show.
What led to that giddiness? Evan sees a coach who has the demeanor, personality, and experience to change the culture around the Jets and get them on track to sustained success, regardless of his lack of head coaching background.
“Aaron Glenn feels like the guy we’ve been waiting for,” Evan said. “I am not one to just turn the mic on and say ‘Yay, we’re the Jets, we’re gonna win!’ I don’t know what it is. I don’t know if it’s some Jets fans being so negative or that I liked him as a player. But there’s something about Aaron Glenn that is making me truly, honestly believe that we have finally gotten the culture changer that the Jet fan has waited for for decades.
“He’s learned from some of the best. Bill Parcells coached him, and Bill Parcells could not wait to say positive things about Aaron Glenn. That means something. He didn’t have to do that. He wants Aaron Glenn to be successful, and believes he will be successful. Sean Payton, who has done a tremendous job in his career, had Aaron Glenn on his staff for five years...he’s now been on Dan Campbell’s staff for four years.”
For Evan, the Campbell association has him most excited about Glenn, as Campbell proves that a long-tortured franchise can be turned around quickly, regardless of the head coach’s prior experience, and Glenn saw what it took to accomplish that during his time with Campbell and the Lions.
“Dan Campbell has worked,” Evan said. “The former player with no experience and a staff that doesn’t even have a lot of experience changed the culture of an organization within a year...Aaron Glenn lived that and saw that.”
