Evan places bulk of Jets' frustration at Aaron Rodgers' feet: 'I expect more from him'

Evan says there is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to the Jets’ stunning loss to the Broncos on Sunday, but when narrowing it down to one area of blame, Evan says the quarterback simply “has to be better.”

Aaron Rodgers seemed to take a step back against a pesky Denver defense after carving the Patriots apart a week earlier, and Evan says a quarterback of Rodgers caliber, while he can’t solve every problem the Jets have, should be able to do enough to beat a team like the Broncos despite the team’s other shortcomings.

“Yes, this team has been undisciplined since Saleh got here,” Evan said. “You can rip Nate Hackett for the play calling. You can rip the defense…you have a lot of things you can point to, but here’s why I’m gonna turn to Aaron Rodgers first.

“I expect more from him. My belief as a Jet fan was that when Aaron Rodgers walks through that door, everything changes. So when you have the ball three times in the fourth quarter with a chance to give your team the league and potentially win the game, and you fail on all three occasions? I’m sorry.”

Evan was alarmed by Rodgers’ lack of communication with Garrett Wilson and Xavier Gipson late in the fourth quarter, when the Jets had a chance to win the game. It wasn’t all Rodgers’ fault by any means, but Evan says Rodgers is a caliber of quarterback who should be able to help minimize the mistakes, miscommunications, and procedural penalties. If he’s not, then the Jets ceiling may not be as high as once thought.

“They did a lot to lose this game, but Aaron Rodgers is the ‘break glass in case of emergency.’ He’s the insurance policy,” Evan said. “I still think you can overcome those things with the quarterback.”
