Evan believes Aaron Glenn can be different from other Jets mistakes for one key reason
Many Jets fans groaned as news broke that the team was coveting Aaron Glenn as its next head coaching, hoping to lock down the Lions defensive coordinator as early as Tuesday.
But Evan Roberts is choosing to take the opposite approach, and choosing to believe that Glenn will finally break the trend of first-year head coaches with a defensive coordinator background will finally work out for the Jets.
“I understand the sentiment of being scared, afraid, or deadest against hiring a first-time head coach with a defensive background,” Evan said. “This has been the Jet formula for decades, and for the most part, it has failed.
“But he played the freaking game. He’s not the same as Rex Ryan or Robert Saleh or everyone else. It feels different. This guy was a Pro Bowl player. He played for the Jets. He understands the market.”
Some believe Glenn is too similar to recent Jets head coaching hires that have failed, most recently Saleh, who didn’t work out after thriving as the 49ers defensive coordinator. But Evan believes Glenn could be the anomaly thanks to his player background, even if his head coaching background is non-existent.
“Maybe I’m being too positive, but I believe in Aaron Glenn,” Evan said. “We tend to think bad stuff is gonna happen...but let’s pause that for a second. The Jets are doing something they do on cycle every 3-4 years, which is hire a new head coach. One of these days, our hope is that they’re gonna get it right.
“Even if you go to Brian Flores or Mike McCarthy, they all face the same risk of failing and it not working here, even if they’ve been successful elsewhere...it’s like a lottery ticket. We don’t know.”
