Gio: Jets need to start Zach Wilson Sunday

The Jets have nothing to play for on Sunday in terms of playoff hopes, but the team maintains that it’s playing for pride, playing to win, and playing to carry over momentum into what will be a crucial offseason.

But Gio says the Jets will be better suited to evaluate the team this offseason if they roll out Zach Wilson one more time in Sunday’s season finale against the Dolphins.

“I wanted him not to play when the games mattered, but now the games don’t matter, so have him play,” Gio said.

“I know it’s nice to knock off a division rival, but the Jets are upset they didn’t make the playoffs, it’s about the future of the Jets for the Jets, and this, to me, would be the best time to see a guy: in a game that doesn’t count.”

Robert Saleh indicated that while the team still believes in Wilson, it could still be Mike White starting and Joe Flacco serving as the backup on Sunday.
Gio doesn’t understand why Gang Green wouldn’t take the opportunity to see Wilson play under less pressure on the road in a game that has no postseason implications, so the team can get a better idea of what they have in their former No. 2 overall pick.

“I would just tell Zach Wilson to go out in this game and just play loose and play fast,” Gio said. “He can’t be any worse than he’s been, quite honestly, and let’s see what you’ve got one more time.

“All these other guys, there’s no point in playing them when there’s nothing on the line.”
