Gio hated the idea of bringing in Nathaniel Hackett as the Jets’ offensive coordinator, so who would he want to replace Mike LaFleur?
Gio presented one clear answer, under one clear condition to entice this candidate to take the job.
“I think the best thing you can do, even if it puts tremendous pressure on Robert Saleh…is bringing in Frank Reich and making him the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach,” Gio said. “That solves so many things.”
Boomer immediately laughed at the idea of Reich coming in as a coordinator and assistant, but Gio says Reich is exactly the kind of coach that the Jets need on the sidelines after offensive coaching was such a question mark for much of the season.
“I know you hate that, but it provides that calming voice and experience and offensive mind that the Jets need, all wrapped into one,” Gio said. “He’s not gonna be Mike LaFleur…but he’d come here if he was gonna be an assistant head coach. He’s not gonna just be an offensive coordinator. He deserves to be a head coach.”
Reich has been taking head coaching interviews this week, including with the Cardinals and Panthers. He was fired as the Colts head coach, and before that was an offensive coordinator for the Eagles and Chargers. So, he might be seeking a bigger role, but Gio says taking this role with the Jets would give Reich the opportunity to eventually replace Robert Saleh.
“I’d slip right in there and say, ‘Man, this guy’s an idiot,’” Gio said. “’I’m gonna take over next year.’”
