Gio: Jets would've hung 30 on Lions yesterday with better QB and clock management

Say what you want about the New York Jets’ loss to the Lions Sunday, and pin the blame on whoever you want for the performance.

To Gregg Giannotti, the biggest loss of the day was simply not having Mike White.

“I don’t want to sit here and crush (Zach Wilson) because he’s been through a lot this year, but this game, in my opinion, is not close with a competent quarterback,” Gio said. “The Lions defense stinks, and they just so happened to have their best game of the year – I wonder why?”

Gio noted how Wilson’s third quarter “was just brutal,” and while his head coach praised the former No 2 pick for rebounding in the fourth, Gio doesn’t think it should’ve even come to that.

“If a healthy Mike White is in there, he would’ve had a similar game than he had against the Bears, because those defenses are similar,” Gio said. “The Lions have gotten better, but the Jets put up 30 points on them if a healthy Mike White is in there.”

Maybe, but we’ll never know, because it was indeed Wilson in there – and in Boomer’s mind, his head coach could’ve helped him a little bit more on the two-minute drill of their final drive, namely in better utilization of timeouts, play calling, and clock management.

“The Jets got the ball with 1:49 left and had all three timeouts - and they had 19 seconds left when they used the first one," Boomer said. "With three timeouts left, if you have a long completion in the middle of a drive, you want to use one of those timeouts to save the precious 30 seconds it will take you to get back to the line of scrimmage and snap the ball."

“Yeah, they left 30 seconds or so out there to give them an opportunity to get closer than the field goal attempt they had of 58 yards,” Gio replied. “That was a huge problem for Rob Saleh."

And, Gio isn’t buying Saleh’s postgame statement that “time wasn’t a factor.”

“He said it wasn’t a factor, but it was a factor, because they had to call the second timeout with one second left, and you left one on the table,” Gio said. “Imagine how many more plays they could've run if they used them right?"
