Trey Lance is coming back from a season-ending injury and Brock Purdy may not play at all in 2023 – but it’s officially clear after the 49ers’ end-of-season press conferences this week that Jimmy Garoppolo is as good as gone from San Francisco, as Kyle Shanahan said he “doesn’t see a way” the pending free agent is back in San Fran next year.
That only adds fuel to the fire of speculation on where he will go, but in Gio’s mind, it’s buyer beware.
“As far as hating Jimmy Garoppolo, you are absolutely right. I don’t know how anyone could watch that press conference and think they don’t despise that guy!” Gio said Thursday. “Plus, you know it came from the 49ers organization, all that stuff in the offseason about how he disappeared after he got that big contract, and the fan base now hates him because he was smiling while his team was getting its ass kicked in the NFC Championship Game.”
Somehow, despite a 31-14 record and a Super Bowl appearance with the Niners, Garoppolo is on the public enemy list – and given all that’s gone on, Gio says there’s no way the Jets, who may or may not be interested, should take a look at Jimmy G.
“So this guy, who took them to a Super Bowl and has a tremendous win percentage as their starting QB, Is despised by the organization and their fans – and Jets fans want that guy?” Gio asked. “No way, no how can you bring him in, because that will set you back even farther from where you’re at – and oh by the way, he’s always hurt every year.”
Boomer agrees, because the Jets may have some inside info.
“Robert Saleh came from there, so he knows what’s going on internally in San Francisco, so I doubt that’s a situation that would unfold unless the Jets are boxed in and can’t acquire anybody. But I think there will be other alternatives out there – they may not be as exciting, but the way they were talking about him would give me great pause. I think Saleh knows better than we do how Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch feel about Jimmy, so I would think it’s not happening here.”
Looks like we’re back to Aaron Rodgers as the top desired quarterback?
