Gio not inspired by Jets hiring Darren Mougey as GM after Aaron Glenn head coaching decision
The Jets are set to introduce Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey on Monday afternoon, and Gio, as he maintained throughout the interview and hiring process, isn’t hopeful that these new faces will be the ones to finally lead this tortured franchise into playoff relevancy.
Mougey was hired as the team’s general manager on Saturday, and Gio’s reaction to the news was similar to his response when Glenn was hired as the head coach earlier in the week.
“He wasn’t interviewed for any of the other GM openings, and they had Aaron Glenn interviewing him, which is sort of ass backwards, in my opinion,” Gio said. “First-time head coach interviewing a GM is a little odd to me.”
Mougey has been with the Broncos his entire career, beginning as a scout and being promoted to director of player personnel and eventually assistant general manager. Gio wanted to see the team hire a GM who had experience at the position, especially after hiring Glenn, but instead, it will once again be two hires that have no prior experience at their respective positions, and Gio can’t bring himself to believe that this regime will turn out any different than the last.
“On paper, this is exactly the opposite of everything I thought the Jets needed. Doesn’t mean it can’t work, I guess,” Gio said. “But at this critical moment in their history, they couldn’t go with a couple of noobies, but they’re going with a couple of noobies.
“They did a lot of things during this search that I would have never done. I wouldn’t have hired my head coach before the GM, I wouldn’t have hired a first-year head coach, I wouldn’t have hired a first-year GM, and I wouldn’t have hired a defensive-minded head coach.”
