Aaron Rodgers turned back the clock with favorite target Davante Adams on Sunday afternoon, as the two connected for 198 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a comeback win over the lowly Jaguars.
Rodgers and Adams teamed up 135 of those yards in the final four minutes of the game, including a 71-yard strike from Rodgers to Adams on a deep route that Adams hauled in perfectly in stride.
It was the kind of performance that left some Jets fans lamenting what could have been if Rodgers had looked like this all season, while other fans believe Sunday’s showing proves that Rodgers deserves another chance next season.
Gio couldn’t help but laugh at that belief.
“The Jets fan who was hanging on to any sort of hope and then saw this yesterday, and it's like, ‘This is why you wanna think about running it back next year.’ Okay,” Gio said. “And the other argument that I love that people make is like, ‘Well, now Aaron Rodgers is fully healthy.’
“Oh, okay. So he's fully healthy when they're 4-10, and the majority of the time he's been here, he's been hurt, and he's 41 years old, but let's bring him back and hope that he's healthy next year. Idiots.”
Gio doesn’t care how good Rodgers looked on Sunday, even if he went for 298 passing yards and three touchdowns. He believes running it back is a recipe for disaster, and that Rodgers, at his age, will not be able to replicate Sunday’s performance on a consistent basis.
“Just to think that, ‘Oh, this is what Aaron Rodgers looks like when he's healthy.’ Well, guess what?” Gio said. “He can't stay healthy, and to assume that he's gonna stay healthy next year is stupid, and you're not going to compete even if he is healthy. You're not competing with the best teams in the AFC.
“The choice is, do we bring Aaron Rodgers back to try and make the playoffs and have a decent season, or do we start our massive rebuild that we’re gonna have to do after next season anyway, right now? Do we get started with that right now as opposed to delaying it and dealing with his drama and probably another injury?”
