Gio warns potential Jets GM candidate not to come to New York: 'You become an idiot'

The Jets have hired The 33rd Team, led by former GM Mike Tannenbaum, to help compile a list of head coach and general manager candidates that Woody Johnson should interview for the vacant positions.

Interestingly enough, the company led by Tannenbaum had already published a list of candidates to replace Joe Douglas before Johnson hired them, which made waves on social media before the company scrubbed the list from its website.

On that since-deleted list was Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi, who Gio says has everything on his resume to suggest that he could be the next great NFL GM, which means if he came to New York, he would instantly become a disaster.

“I'm looking at this guy, Mike Borgonzi is the perfect, perfect guy to come here. The next guy to come here and fail. Because he's got the resume that just sticks out,” Gio said. “He's one of these guys, I always say, when you're really smart, you go to the Jets or the Browns, you become an idiot. So this guy is really smart. Went to Brown, played football at Brown, All Ivy League honors. He's been working in the Kansas City Chiefs organization. Could you work in a better organization? I mean, this guy's perfect. The assistant GM, he is ready to take on the job.

“He is gonna come here and every bit of intelligence in his body is gonna get evaporated, or he's gonna get his legs cut out underneath him from Woody Johnson, who's gonna Nancy Kerrigan him from behind. That's what's gonna happen.”

Borgonzi is expected to be a popular GM candidate this offseason, and the Jets will be looking for a new mind to lead the organization. The chance to make the Jets a winning team means a chance to become legendary in the biggest media market in the world, but Gio warns Borgonzi to stay far away.

“So, good luck Mike Borgonzi. This isn't the place for you,” Gio said. “If you want to have a good career, don't come here.”
