The Jets never expected to be staring at a 1-2 record with the mighty Chiefs coming to town, but after Aaron Rodgers went down with a season-ending injury just four snaps into his New York tenure, the outlook shifted drastically.
But Gio wonders, after watching the team as a whole perform through three weeks, how much better would the Jets actually be if Rodgers never got hurt?
“Were they never as good as we thought they were?” Gio said. “We talked about them having a top five defense, they got Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, a bunch of great running backs, they brought in Dalvin Cook. What the hell?”
Aside from their Week 1 win over Buffalo, the Jets defense has been a disappointment, while the offensive line remains an issue. Meanwhile, Gio notes, the 49ers never skipped a beat since putting an unknown at quarterback in Brock Purdy last season, and he has helped San Francisco to an unbeaten record after undergoing major surgery in the offseason.
Shouldn’t the Jets be able to at least remain competitive with Zach Wilson if they had a roster carrying Super Bowl aspirations?
“The 49ers got a guy, Mr. Irrelevant, to pop in there at six feet tall, looking like a middle school kid, and take them [to the NFC championship game], because they have a great team,” Gio said. “The Jets went from a team you picked to go to the Super Bowl to being a double digit underdog every week!”
