The Jets announced that Zach Wilson is the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Lions after Mike White was not cleared for contact by team doctors due to his ribs injury.
Is Wilson the right decision? Evan and Tommy Lugauer had differing opinions.
When presented with a scenario by Tommy that Flacco could give New York the better chance of victory on Sunday, Evan made it clear that he wasn’t on that side of the fence, and in fact never wanted to see Flacco in pads for the Jets again.
“Here’s the problem,” Evan said. “Joe Flacco looked so freaking bad for the 30 seconds he was out there against Buffalo… He looked so bad coming into that game that I never want to see him again.”
Tommy was willing to overlook Flacco’s disastrous, albeit brief, performance in relief last weekend when White was catching his breath on the sidelines after two heavy hits from the Bills defense.
“Totally different scenario…This is a situation where he had all week to prepare,” Tommy said. “He can do similar things to Mike White where he may not make the major mistakes.
“I get he’s a statue back there…and yeah Zach Wilson moves around a lot, but he throws into triple coverage and makes mistakes that are gonna hurt you against a Lions offense that can take advantage of it.”
Evan didn’t want to hear about Flacco being rusty off the bench on Sunday, when he turned the ball over on the very first play. He saw all he needed to see in that limited window, and Wilson should get the start (though Evan admittedly has no idea what to expect from Wilson).
“Joe Flacco is a Super Bowl champion and a longtime veteran,” Evan said. “There is no excuse…they were better off having me back there.”
