Tiki Barber was the latest to ask the question when it comes to the state of the Jets.
“What do you do with Zach Wilson?”
Mike White was banged up on Sunday, but not beaten down, as he earned even more respect from his teammates as he played through a ribs injury that he sustained while standing in the pocket and taking heavy hits from the Bills in a narrow loss, still showing more offensive potential than Wilson has shown since being drafted second overall.
White will try to play on Sunday, and will try to lead Gang Green to a playoff spot over the last four weeks, and Tiki says it will be hard to justify giving Wilson another shot, even next season, if White continues to play at this level.
“Looks significantly better running that system than Zach Wilson did,” Tiki said of White. “It creates an unenviable position for the Jets. If Mike White keeps being Mike White…I don’t know how you can go back to Zach Wilson.
“The only way for Zach Wilson to get back in the graces of Jets fans is if Mike White breaks a rib…can’t play, and Zach Wilson comes back and looks good. That’s the only way he gets his job back, is via injury. It sucks to say that, but I don’t see how else Zach Wilson is justifiably the starting quarterback for the Jets.”
Looking ahead to next season, Tiki still doesn’t see Wilson being a trusted option as the starter, and he has seemed to have seen enough when it comes to the former No. 2 overall pick. Wilson seems much more likely to be a draft bust than a redemption story.
“Even if Mike White leaves, there is going to be a free agent veteran quarterback that comes here and has to compete with Zach Wilson,” Tiki said. “You can’t let Zach Wilson take the reins and be the guy. You’ve seen it for two years and it hasn’t worked out.”
